AU Summary

·The Shimizu clan is one of the oldest clans on Hinomoto, though not an influential one by the nature of their creation - once a branch of the Emperor's own clan, they were given a special dispensation to oversee the governing processes of the nobility. They were meant to be a means of oversight and thus tasked with maintaining a strict neutrality for their own clan, both socially and politically. · Because of this special dispensation, their clan heads were not born into the position - they fought for and won it by rite of combat. Historically, members of the main branch of the Shimizu clan won the position due to a lifetime of training and preporation, however that changed after Raikou's father married a commoner and fell ill. · His mother won the position when Raikou was little more than a toddler, much to his uncle's chagrin. The man spent the next decade sewing the careful seeds of rebellion and, once he'd drawn Raikou to his side, confronted Karen when Raikou was fifteen. What was promised to be a peaceful coup to change the direction of the clan's efforts ended in bloodshed when his uncle, enraged by his mother's calm words and firm stance, killed Raikou's father - his own elder brother - to force her hand. In his madness, his uncle turned the blade on Raikou, who was saved by his mother bodily protecting him and taking the killing blow instead. She charged him with taking up one of the clans sacred swords, to fulfill his duty, and so... he did. · In one night, Raikou killed his entire clan, their retainers, their supporters, and their servants. Everyone except his younger sister, the only one free of the taint their clan had become and when she arrived home at the end of the fight, he left her there to blame him for their deaths to leave the island and join the Grey Wardens. · It took Raikou several years to find the Wardens, his path meandering as he learned of the world and the languages beyond Hinomoto, most of that time spent between Rivaini lands and Tantervale, where he met a traveling company of Wardens. Less than a month later, he'd successfully survived his Joining and become a member of that company. After the events in Kirkwall and the Warden prison, Raikou was given the authorization to travel on his own in order to recruit. For two years his primary area of focus has been the Free Marches - until the destruction of the Conclave. At word of the death of the Divine, and with the loss of contact with his Commander added to the whisper of the Calling in his ear, he made his way towards Haven.
